Protecting K-12 children from cyber threats
If you are connected, you are secured!
Overview
Step Ahead has taken an unique approach to combating cyberthreats targeted towards children, teens and young adults. It is not parental controls, but rather an holistic and comprehensive approach towards securing all of their devices whether they are in school, at home or elsewhere and continuously teaching them in the most engaging ways the cybersecurity awareness right through the year. If they are connected, they are secured.
The current threat landscape for children online is complex and ever-evolving. Some of the most significant threats:
- Cyberbullying: This involves the use of technology to harass, threaten, or embarrass others. It can have serious emotional and psychological consequences for victims
- Phishing scams: These scams attempt to trick children into revealing personal information, home address, parents occupation, passwords or credit card numbers. Phishing emails or messages often appear legitimate.
- Malware: This malicious software can infect devices and steal personal information, damage files, or even take control of the device. Children may be lured into downloading malware through deceptive links or attachments.
- Online grooming: This involves an adult attempting to build a relationship with a child online with the intention of exploiting them.
- Deep Fakes: These are realistic but fake images or videos created using artificial intelligence. They can be used to spread misinformation or to manipulate children into believing false information.
- Disinformation: This can have a significant impact on children, teens and young adults, it can mislead, create confusion, promote harmful behaviors, damage relationships and contribute towards mental health problems and identity crisis.
- Social media challenges: Some online challenges can be dangerous or even deadly. Children may be tempted to participate in these challenges to gain social status or attention.
It’s important for parents and caregivers to be aware of these threats and to educate children about online safety. By taking steps to protect their children online, parents can help them stay safe and avoid becoming victims of cybercrime.
